Alright, here it is: your last two chances to make it out to a Mass Live Arts show! And this is an amazing one to make it out to. Director Phil Soltanoff is “without a doubt one of America’s still-unknown great auteurs” (Financial Times, 2014).

Tonight and tomorrow 8pm (http://masslivearts.org/event/phil-soltanoff/) , join us for great art, beer, burgers and general celebration of a great summer!

See you there,
Ilan Bachrach

Hello friends,

Here we are, staring the last week of Mass Live Arts in the face. Wether you’ve attended any MLA performance, gallery installation, or film or not I’d highly suggest not missing this weeks offerings.

This week brings us two accomplished and extremely talented artists - Nature Theater of Oklahoma (in the gallery with Empire! on view tonight through Saturday) and Phil Soltanoff’s LA Party & An Evening With William Shatner* (July 24-26). I couldn’t be more excited to wrap up the summer presenting these completely fresh, thought-provoking works in the Berkshires to this community. The concepts and ideas being explored and discussed are universal and relatable and yet completely astonishing. Whether you’ve experienced Hunter S. Thompson-esque benders or not, wether you’re a scientist, artist, bus driver, tax lawyer, professional skydiver - these shows will delight you, blow you mind, and leave you with an acute appreciation for the extreme potential for creation and magic in every moment of every day. Performances that will mystify and
delight, a participatory gallery installation that will bring out your inner Warhol, and burgers…always with the burgers. Please join us!

See you this last week,
Ilan Bachrach
Artistic Director

Empire!
Nature Theater of Oklahoma
On view: July 22 - 26
FREE
Opening Reception TONIGHT (7/22) at 7pm
View it before or after the show!

Empire! by Nature Theater of Oklahoma is a project inspired by Andy Warhol’s 1964 silent black-and-white 16mm film Empire, a slow motion (8hrs. 5 minutes) static shot of the Empire State Building. Nature Theater will be remaking the Warhol original– all eight plus hours of it – creating an animated version on 4”x6” index cards that feature the Empire State Building. Visitors are invited to create minute-long sections of the film by drawing 10 (mostly) identical cards that will later be animated and added to the film. The gallery will also be displaying what Nature Theater has collected and animated with other communities and individuals from around the world up until this point. Pencils and markers provided.

Phil Soltanoff closes out the festival with two of his distinctive new media theatrical works, L.A. PARTY and AN EVENING WITH WILLIAM SHATNER ASTERISK. Soltanoff, an award-winning director, challenges familiar forms, build links among seemingly incompatible media and materials, and employs new technologies in surprising and human ways.

Hey there,

As we near the middle of the festival, word of mouth is getting out and we’re seeing more and more of the Berkshire community come out to join us at Mass Live Arts. We’re glad to see you.

This week’s work is strong, raucous and important for you to see. It highlights our perceptions and have they often differ from reality and is, honestly, just plain fun. It’d be a shame (or in this case, a crime) if you weren’t there.

Also, join us this Sunday July 20th at 6pm for our first ever FREE Benefit Party! Under the beer tent we’ll be grilling, drinking Big Elm Beer, dancing to sounds by special guest DJs, and singing our hearts out to karaoke. Did we mention it’s free to attend?!

See you tonight!

Cheers,

Anne Gridley draws things. In the spring of 2012, Gridley began exploring the process of blind contour drawing. She focuses solely on the subject until the drawing is complete, instead of constantly shifting focus between the subject and the paper. The result is a strange and sketchy line drawing, rather than an exact reproduction of the subject.

MASS LIVE ARTS / WEEK 2 RUNDOWN

Thanks to all who came out to see a performance, view the gallery, or see a film last week! The word of mouth about how good the show was spread like wildfire and Saturday night really filled up! Thanks for sticking around afterwards and sharing your thoughts about the work over a beer and burger at the tent (it really is the best way to finish a night off).

We hope you’ll join us for week 2 ‘cause it’s only getting better. This week we have raucous performances by Sibyl Kempson & Mike Iveson, Jr. with Crime or Emergency (http://masslivearts.org/event/crime-or-emergency/) (Wed-Fri), Anne Gridley will be roaming around The Berkshires to capture faces and places for her exhibition of blind contour drawings, Drawings (http://masslivearts.org/event/drawings/) (on view Tues-Sun, opening reception Tues @ 7pm), and TONIGHT we’ll continue on with the seminal work of Reza Abdoh with part 2 in the trilogy, Bogeyman (http://masslivearts.org/event/bogeyman/) .

Crime or Emergency threatens our conceptions of contemporary American theater and identity as we safely understand it. Iveson, with his demonic arrangements of the indigenous music of their native New Jersey, joins Kempson in a rapturous and obsessive melodrama of consciousness. Together they distill this 11-person play into a desperate and harried duet.

Faye Driscoll continues on through Saturday!

Friends,

Last night, we opened Faye Driscoll’s Thank You For Coming: Attendance (http://masslivearts.org/event/thank-you-for-coming/) and all I can say is “wow”. If you were there, you know the energy I am talking about and, if you weren’t, I suggest you get a ticket for tonight. If you have plans: change them. What’s going on here this weekend is monumental and something you can not miss.

Many people last night hung out afterwards at the Beer Tent wanting to discuss the show, talk to Faye and her dancers, and to just be together for a little while before breaking the magic of the evening. Comments like “best thing I’ve seen all year” to “good, clean, unpretentious fun” were floating around. This kind of ground-breaking work, these conversations and interactions between audience and artists are exactly why I started this festival. I hope you will be a part of it.

Join us tonight or tomorrow. It’d be great to see you.

Cheers,

MLA / 14 SPOTLIGHT:
Phil Soltanoff
L.A. Party and An Evening With William Shatner Asterisk
“Hilarious yet eerie, playful yet purposeful, oblique yet precise, conceiver-director Phil Soltanoff’s ‘An Evening with William Shatner Asterisk’ proved a dialectical delight…it was, pardon the expression, fascinating.” - Robert Avila, San Francisco Bay Guardian

https://www.facebook.com/events/1423696004556745/
Closing out the festival July 24 - 26 is a double-header of work from director Phil Soltanoff, L.A. Party and An Evening with William Shatner Asterisk. Lauded as funny yet insightful, Phil’s work is highly collaborative with a systems designer (Rob Ramirez), writers (David Barlow and Joe Diebes) and a whole host of performers (including our own artistic director, Ilan Bachrach!). Who knows…maybe Captain Kirk himself will make an unexpected appearance.

In L.A. Party, a fanatical vegan falls off the purity wagon one night, plunging head first into a wild, drug-induced bender in the City of Angels. Six performers take the stage to produce a compelling composite human being recounting this hilarious short story by David Barlow, mixed with live video.

An Evening With William Shatner Asterisk meticulously catalogues and remixes everything William Shatner said on the original Star Trek series. Phil Soltanoff with Joe Diebes (writer) and Rob Ramirez (systems designer) create a dynamic video oracle of the lead commander on the USS Enterprise – expanding our universe on contemporary arts and science as only Captain Kirk can.

Crime or Emergency
“a piece of hysterical realism that plays out in a doctor’s office, in a parking garage, at a rodeo, on a boat, etc. As both actor and playwright, Kempson has a gift for rendering the fairly normal as intensely weird.” - Alexis Soloski, The Village Voice

https://www.facebook.com/events/218279461714782/

For the second week of Mass Live Arts, we bring you two of America’s most iconic experimental theater makers, Sibyl Kempson and Mike Iveson, Jr, July 16-18. Titillating and virtuosic live music and uproarious performances will leave you begging for more. We recommend seeing this hilarious piece of theater more than once.

Assuming a post-logical incoherence as the basis for human motivation, feeling, and violence; Crime or Emergency threatens our conceptions of contemporary American theater and identity as we safely understand it. Iveson, with his demonic arrangements of the indigenous music of their native New Jersey, joins Kempson in a rapturous and obsessive melodrama of consciousness. Together they distill this 11-person play into a desperate and harried duet.

MLA / 14 SPOTLIGHT:
Faye Driscoll’s Thank You For Coming: Attendance
“Ms. Driscoll is fascinating in that she makes such utterly original work. It doesn’t look like anything you’ve ever seen before, nor can you imagine thinking it up.” - Roslyn Sulcas, The New York Times

https://www.facebook.com/events/870274959664586/

We’re so excited for Faye Driscoll to kicking off our performances this season with her newest dance piece Thank You for Coming: Attendance, July 10-12 at 8pm.

Thank You For Coming is a series of works which heighten how we experience ourselves in relation to other bodies, other stories, and the spaces we all inhabit. MLA / 14 will present Attendance, the premiere iteration of the series.

Individual bodies come together to make something bigger than the sum of their parts - a series of entanglements exploiting how dance and performance have been used as tools to embody knowledge, to pass on experience, and to liberate the id, the erotic, and the fantastical. By imagining a society in which we are all participants in the co-creation of our reality, Attendance asks how performance can create a ritual space of group action and transformation.

SPOTLIGHT: Gallery at Mass Live Arts
Andrew Schneider | Anne Gridley | Nature Theater of Oklahoma

https://www.facebook.com/events/629896867098442/
Mass Live Arts is expanding in new ways unseen in contemporary performance with it’s introduction of the Gallery at Mass Live Arts, a rotating gallery showcasing participatory visual works by highly established American theater artists.

We’ve curated the gallery this summer to focus on Participatory Art, an approach to making art in which the audience is encouraged to engage directly in the creative process. Each exhibit gives members of the community (LIKE YOU) the opportunity to be an integral part of the creation of the work whether through acting in a scene with a complete stranger, sitting for a blind contour portrait, or creating your own impressions of an iconic building. By interacting with the artists and their work, each ending result is directly affected by you.

Just interested in viewing the fantastic creations made with the Berkshire community? Not a problem! All exhibitions take place at Daniel Arts Center, Bard College at Simon’s Rock at 84 Alford Road in Great Barrington. Gallery works are FREE to the public and open daily from 11am–8pm.

To participate in the creation of the works read on below or email info@masslivearts.org. Reservations are required for participation.

SPOTLIGHT: Monday Night Performance-Films
Reza Abdoh’s Bogeyman Trilogy

http://www.masslivearts.org

New for 2014! Mass Live Arts will present Monday night performance-films from influential experimental theater artists and companies. This year focuses on a trilogy of critical works by acclaimed 90s director, Reza Abdoh; The Hip-Hop Waltz of Eurydice (Los Angeles Theatre Center, 1990), Bogeyman (Los Angeles Theatre Center, 1992) and The Law Of Remains (The Hotel Diplomat, NYC, 1993).

Presentation of these films is incredibly important to us here at MLA as Abdoh’s ground-breaking pieces, experienced by relatively few at the time of their creation, contextualize much of the live performance that is happening today. Not all of the great theater and performance makers of our time have lived to continue their work. By presenting films of these extraordinary original productions, we hope to inspire and inform new generations of theater artists and viewers while honoring and continuing the legacy of great innovators that have come before us, such as Reza Abdoh.

Join us Monday nights in July!
$10 tickets can be purchased online at masslivearts.org (http://www.masslivearts.org) .

All films were shot and edited by Adam Soch Williams. Screenings will be followed by discussions with former Dar A Luz company members and Abdoh collaborators.

Mass Live Arts is grateful for the permission of the Reza Abdoh Estate to present these films.
